Zakir Naik, a controversial Islamic preacher, is visiting Pakistan at the government’s invitation and will receive strong security during his month-long stay. Recently, he attended an event at an orphanage run by the Pakistan Sweet Home Foundation, where he was invited to give awards to orphaned girls. However, he refused to interact with them, saying they were “na-mahram,” which means they are unmarried women without a male guardian in Islamic terms.

In a video that went viral, Naik walked off the stage when the girls approached him. He reacted strongly when the announcer referred to the girls as his “daughters,” stating, “You cannot call them your daughters,” because they are considered “non-mahrams.” Many people in Pakistan criticized his actions, calling them “peak misogyny.” Lawyer Saria Benazir expressed her disgust on X, saying, “Dr. Zakir Naik is a religious scholar and guest in Pakistan, but I find this act so abominable—peak misogyny and sanctimony on display. How embarrassing and disturbing it must have been for these poor little girls!”
