The Uruguay World Cup 2022 squad has been revealed, and there are many familiar faces and names among the 26 players chosen by Diego Alonso to travel to Qatar.
In World Cup history, there is only one rule: don’t write off Uruguay. Despite having a population of less than four million people, the 1930 and 1950 world champions consistently produced exceptional players as well as an inspiring fighting spirit.
As Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez try to extract the last of their individual brilliance, the new breed – Darwin Nunez, Real Madrid warhorse Fede Valverde, Manchester United hopeful Facundo Pellistri – look to ensure the mythology lives on.
Uruguay will have learned that change is good after qualifying for the Qatar World Cup 2022. Oscar Tabarez’s illustrious cycle came to a traumatic end last November with four major defeats after 15 years and more than 200 games.
Diego Alonso, El Maestro’s replacement, brought new ideas and five new faces – primarily Valverde and Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, who is now likely to miss the finals due to thigh surgery – to provide the renovation that Tabarez couldn’t or wouldn’t make. Uruguay came back to win their final four games, securing an unexpected qualification.
After years of sitting back, a revamped Uruguay is now betting on high pressing and quick passing to provide more chances in front of goal for their serial killers, Suarez, Nunez (left), and likely sub Cavani.
However, centre-backs Diego Godin and Jose Maria Gimenez, as well as alternatives Sebastian Coates and Martin Caceres, are very capable in the air, but lack speed in open play. VAR is keeping a close eye on their penchant for dead-ball dark arts as well.
