Dr. Shahzad Baig, chief of the Pakistan Polio Eradication Program, has resigned. Dr. Shahzad’s resignation came after he failed to prevent polio’s spread in Pakistan.
According to Insight News, Dr. Shahzad was asked to resign by the government, unable to be satisfied with his performance. Dr. Shahzad submitted his resignation to the National Institute of Health (NIH).
Dr. Shahzad was appointed as the chief during PTI’s tenure.

Pakistan, in 2024, reported three cases of polio while 153 sewage samples tested positive.
The National Polio Testing Laboratory released sample reports from 5 districts.
Sewage samples were sent from Karachi, Quetta, and Kohat. 153 out of 39 districts, sewerage tests came out positive for the year 2024 so far.
Tests were conducted from 9th May to 15th in 5 districts.
