Bill Gates, once the richest person in the world, has dropped to No. 9 on the 2023 list of America’s wealthiest people, down from No. 6 last year. Although he still holds a fortune of $107 billion, his net worth has decreased by $4 billion over the past year. This marks the first time since 1991 that Gates has fallen out of the world’s top ten richest people, now ranking No. 12 globally.

A major reason for this decline is his 2021 divorce from Melinda French Gates. Melinda, who stepped down from her role as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, received an additional $12.5 billion for her own philanthropic work. Her net worth has now grown to $29 billion, making her the ninth-richest woman in the U.S. Despite the changes, Bill Gates has accepted that his ranking will continue to fall over time, while both he and Melinda pursue their separate philanthropic paths.
