In a rare occurrence, a California mother gave birth to twins who were born just minutes apart in 2021 and 2022. A set of twins born will now celebrate their birthdays on different days, months, and years.
On Friday evening, parents Fatima Madrigal and Robert Trujillo of Greenfield welcomed a son named Alfredo into the world on New Year’s Eve at 11:45 p.m. local time.

Just 15 minutes later, right when the clock struck midnight, the couple welcomed Alfredo’s twin sister, named Aylin, on New Year’s Day. This way the twins born in different years.
Aylin was welcomed into the world at 5 lbs., 14 oz., while big brother Alfredo weighed 6 lbs., 1 oz. Both were born at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, California, the People magazine reported.
In a press release from the Natividad Medical Center obtained by the outlet, the mother explained her feelings behind her newborn kids’ unique birthdays.

“It’s crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays,” Madrigal said in a press release obtained by People. “I was surprised and happy that she arrived at midnight.”
“Natividad welcomed Aylin Yolanda Trujillo as the area’s first baby of 2022!” the hospital tweeted on Saturday. “Her twin, Alfredo Antonio Trujillo, was born 15 minutes earlier at 11:45 pm Friday, Dec. 31, meaning their birthday falls on a different day, month and year — a 1 in 2 million chance!”

A doctor who works at the hospital, Ana Abril Arias, called it “one of the most memorable deliveries” of her career, the outlet reported.
“It was an absolute pleasure to help these little ones arrive here safely in 2021 and 2022,” she said. “What an amazing way to start the New Year!”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are typically 120,000 twin births every year in the United States. The births make up just over 3 percent of all births, the organization states.
Alfredo and Aylin now join three older siblings — two girls and a boy. Madrigal said her oldest son is thrilled to have a brother, and the rest of their family is excited to meet the new additions.
In another rare case last year, a couple in the US state of Tennessee adopted and later gave birth from frozen embryo that was 27-years-old, setting a new record for the longest frozen embryo to have resulted in a baby birth. Prior to that, a 72-year-old gave birth to her first child.
